B.B. The ticket price is among the highest in the city, but the acts usually deserve it. Service-charge-free tickets can be purchased at the club's box office daily 10am-midnight. There is also a small stage in a more intimate room named after the famous guitar -- Lucille's Grill, is off the main bar where less known acts perform for the budget conscience fan. The original Birdland, named for alto-sax jazz giant, Charlie "Yardbird" Parker was located on Broadway across the street from the Ed Sullivan Theater (where talk-show host, David Letterman's show is currently taped). This incarnation of Birdland, now in its third location, is perfectly situated amidst the Times Square hotels, and just upstairs from the A Train's 42nd Street stop. During it's transformation, new vigor has been added to bring back some of the sparkle of yesteryear when jazz musicians were heard regularly at the Plaza. In fact, Miles Davis released a 1958 live recording from the Persian Room performing with his Kind of Blue band. Here's hoping the Plaza begins to feel the weight of this history and starts offering jazz nightly. Redeye Grill is conveniently located near many midtown Manhattan and Times Square hotels. It's interesting to watch the band perform in a tight balcony space above the bar and do their best among the crowd of diners and imbibers below. The jazz is good, and the food is fine, and there's no cover charge, and if you want to talk during the performance you will not be made to shush.

Call before you go, because I just tried and someone answered the phone with a voice that sounded like he just toasted the demise of his restaurant a little incoherent and spooky.

Sundays feature an afternoon tap class and showcase which honors the late, legendary hoofer: Buster Brown now from 1pm to 4pm. Followed by Sarah Hayes & the Sophisticats starting at 6:30. Every Monday Ron Allan and the The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra performs from 8:30pm to 11:30pm. Tuesdays feature the The Bensen-Scott Big Band. The showcase is lead by Travis Sullivan of Bjorkestra. Other musicians are invited to sit in as well. They also have different styles of Jazz every Sunday. Live entertainment from around the world nightly, and a lot of chances to see belly dancing and eat wonderful cuisine.
Times Square Grill	212-246-1960	1611 Broadway	(at West 49th street) Vince Giordano & His Nighthawks 11-piece Orchestra perform Mondays and Tuesdays. 8:30 to 11:30 - Three Sets. Food & Drinks available to cover the $25 minimum. The Nighthawks play original, traditional period arrangements that have been painstakingly transcribed from recordings.
Tobacco Road	(212) 947-1188	355 West 41 St.	(corner of 9th avenue) Relaxed club featuring mostly rock, funk, reggae, blues, folk and jazz too. But the kind of bands they seem to feature come from "music counts more than costume and hair" school of playing. Hiram Bullock, Will Bernard, Bernie Worrell, Buddy Miles, and Buddy Cage are among the headliners who've played and help define Tobacco Road. It seems that improvised music is likely to be a part of every show.

Their top musicians are playing here live. Open 7 days a week, lunch through dinner, 11 am -2 am. No cover. Singers and musicians to look out for: Sofia Rei Koutsovitis, Laura Andrea Leguia, Hernan Romero, and Gabriel Alegría. Great food, presented gloriously for a jazz club, that is exotic and authentic. This is exciting jazz; and you may run into some instruments last seen 50 miles into an arid wilderness.

Check the linked schedule to view when jazz is available in Zankel Hall. This is a fine concert jazz venue with appropriately high priced tickets for high profile and noteworthy performers.
